Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam

The UPSC conducts various prestigious examinations for recruitment into civil services and other government positions in India. The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is the most well-known among these.

UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) Pattern

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

  • Type: Objective (MCQ-based)
  • Papers: General Studies Paper I and CSAT
  • Total Marks: 400 (200 marks each)
  • Duration: 2 hours per paper
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd deduction for wrong answers

2. Main Examination (Mains)

Descriptive (Written) exam consisting of 9 papers.

3. Personality Test (Interview)

  • Marks: 275
  • Tests leadership, decision-making, communication skills, confidence, and overall personality.
  • Final Merit List: Based on Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 Marks.

Final Selection & Rank Allocation

Based on rank, candidates are allocated services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc.

UPSC Exam Frequency & Attempts

  • Conducted: Once a year
  • Number of Attempts:
    • General: 6 (until 32 years)
    • OBC: 9 (until 35 years)
    • SC/ST: Unlimited (until 37 years)
    • PwD: 9 (General/OBC), Unlimited (SC/ST)

UPSC Preparation Strategy

  • Understand the syllabus and refer to NCERT books and standard reference materials.
  • Stay updated with current affairs (The Hindu, Indian Express, Yojana, PIB).
  • Practice mock tests and answer writing for both Prelims and Mains.
  • Choose an optional subject based on interest and scoring trends.
  • Follow a structured study plan and ensure consistent revision.
